All the national news programs Tuesday evening were covering this Harvard study on coffee and prostate cancer. Basically: men who drank 6 cups a day were the only ones that showed a reduced rate of death from prostate cancer. It wasn’t the caffeine, because it didn’t matter if the coffee was caffeinated or de-caffeinated.
ABC News was the only one who stated a similar recent study from Sweden on women showed 5 cups of coffee per day lowered their breast cancer risk. (Jingmei Li, et. al.) They called coffee a “battering ram against cancer,” and postulated that it might be a rare chemical called methylpyridinium – I can’t find any biochemistry on this exact term except at this link.
The Harvard School of Public Health press release that probably started all this hubbub!
